The epicene _they_ and its application in standardized testing
Does anyone know if the college admission tests in the United States, the
SAT and the ACT, attempt to test the epicene they? I've looked through a
handful of released items and I have not seen any clear evidence that it
is tested. I strongly suspect that the concept cannot be validly tested,
but I have no proof of my suspicion. (The epicene they refers to the use
of they as a genderless pronoun, as in "When a person decides to become a
surgeon they must accept that they will have to stand while at work.")
